4 qualities you need to look for in a small business mentor

We talk a lot about why it’s important to get a mentor. But it has to be the right mentor, otherwise you won’t get a proper return on your investment.
You need to find a mentor who has the experience, personality and availability to help you take your business to the next level.
So when you do your research, look for a mentor with these four qualities.
1. Relevant experience
Don’t rush into a mentorship without properly vetting the person. You won’t learn much from a mentor who doesn’t have experience in your particular field. You need a seasoned pro who’s been there, done that and got the proverbial t-shirt to prove it.
2. Honesty
Sometimes, a mentor needs to be an ‘unreasonable friend’ – i.e. tell you things you need to hear but don’t want to hear. Also, a mentor needs to be able to deliver these uncomfortable truths in a constructive way, so you’re willing to take them on board.
3. Personality
You don’t need to be best friends with your mentor. But you do need to respect them and feel some sort of connection. Otherwise, the mentor will be unlikely to inspire you.
4. Availability
Finally, as part of your research process, ask the mentor how accessible they’ll be and how much time you’ll get to spend with them. Because even if they have the experience and personality you’re looking for, the relationship won’t work if the two parties have different expectations around availability.
